JESSE N. SMITH, son of James D. and Rebecca (Higdon) Smith, was born
September 18, 1838, at Glasgow Junction, Barren County. (See sketch of
James T. Smith.) He was reared on the farm, and remained with his
father (his mother having died when he was but nine years old), until he
was twenty-one years old, when, November 14, 1859, he married Julia
Dillion, of Barren County, a daughter of Jacob and Naoma (Greer)
Dillion. To their union five children have been born: Thomas Hood,
William H. (deceased), Tyrey, Jacob and Mary Elizabeth. Mrs. Smith died
November 27, 1870, a member of the Methodist Episcopal Church, and
November 14, 1879, Mr. Smith married Annie Fortune, a native of Monroe
County, a daughter of George and Elizabeth (Martin) Fortune. George
Fortune, a son of Elisha Fortune, was born in Franklin County, Va.; when
a young man came to Barren County, Ky.; before marriage he was a
merchant, and has since been a farmer. By Mr. Smith's second marriage
three children were born: Jessie B., Minnie May and George Cleveland.
Mr. Smith is the owner of 182 acres of land where he now resides and
where he located after his marriage; he has cleared 140 acres, and
improved with good buildings, etc. He served as deputy sheriff for
several years, and was formerly a member of the Grange. Politically he
is a Democrat, and cast his first presidential vote for Bell in 1860.
He is a member of the Christian Church, and his wife of the
