Bath County

JOHN B. SANFORD was born in Bath County, Ky., June 26, 1856, son of Reuben
and Sarah (Lyons) Sanford, natives respectively of Paris, Ky., and Bath
County. The grandfather of our subject, William Sanford, was a native of
Virginia and an early settler of Bourbon County, Ky. Reuben Sanford served
in the Mexican war under Capt. Sims, who raised his Company in Bourbon
County; and in the recent war, under Humphrey Marshall. His death took
place in 1881 at the age of fifty years. John Lyons, maternal grandfather
of our subject, was a native of Kentucky. John B. Sanford remained in Bath
County until fifteen years of age, then served an apprenticeship of four
years at the saddlery and harness trade, and in 1881 started in business for
himself at Catlettsburg, where he carries a stock valued at $1,500, the
famous Kentucky spring saddle being a specialty. He is a Freemason, and is
as yet unmarried.
