WALLER SHARP, one of the largest tobacco dealers in the State of Kentucky,
was born in Bath County, Ky., March 16, 1850, and is a son of Joseph and
Catherine (Ratliff) Sharp. Joseph Sharp, a native of Kentucky, was a very
prominent physician and practiced in Bath County a number of years. He was
a son of Moses Sharp, a native of Virginia, who was an early settler of Bath
County, Ky., having laid out and named the town of Sharpsburg. Waller Sharp
has spent his life in his native county, and though his education was
somewhat limited he is a gentleman of good business capacity. He was
engaged in the grocery business at Sharpsburg for about fourteen years and
was very successful. He was also engaged in agricultural pursuits. In 1880
he commenced dealing in leaf tobacco, in which he dealt very extensively.
February 16, 1875, he married Miss Mittie K. Elgin, of Georgetown, Ky.,
daughter of Samuel and Mary (Gaines) Elgin. Four children have blessed
their union, viz: Elgin, Waller, Anna J. and James (deceased). Mrs. Sharp
is a member of the Christian Church. Mr. Sharp is not a member of any
church, but is a liberal contributor to all church and religious organizations.
