Samuel T. Nickels is a native of Letcher County, Ky., was born June 25,
1856. His father William H. Nickels, is a native of Scott County, Ky.,
where he is engaged in the real estate business, and is regarded as one of
the county's wealthiest men. He married Miss Elizabeth Duff, of Lee County,
Va. During the administrations of Hayes and Garfield Samuel T. Nickels was
Postmaster of Whitesburg, Letcher County, but in 1884 he entered into
mercantile business at Catlettaburg, Boyd County, and does a large wholesale
and retail trade in clothing and gents' furnishing goods, carrying a stock
valued at $20,000. He is a very heavy advertiser, which facts taken in
connection with his business tact, energy and strict integrity, has made him
one of the most substantial business men of the Big Sandy country. Although
yet a young man, he has massed a fortune of no small proportions. June 3,
1877, he married Miss Mattie Dickeson, who has borne him two children,
Samuel and Edward. In politics Mr. Nickels is a Democrat; he is also a
Knight Templar, and, beside his large mercantile interests, own 2,000 acres
in Letcher County, Ky., and Scott County, Va.
