JAMES N. BRAFFORD, attorney-at-law, was born in Granger County, Tenn.,
February 14, 1837. His ancestors came from Virginia and settled in
Tennessee at an early date. His parents were William H. and Caroline
(Painter) Brafford. They moved to Kentucky in 1841, and settled in Knox
County, where they have lived ever since. They were born to their union
nine children, five daughters and four sons, viz: James N., Mary S.,
Frederick, Mary C., John P., Ellen, Samuel T., Charity and Barbara J. James
N. Brafford engaged in agricultural pursuits until 1860, when he turned his
attention to mercantile affairs, which he followed until 1871, at which time
he received an appointment at Washington City, which position he held until
1879. He had previously studied law, and in 1882 was admitted to the
Barboursville bar, where he has since been actively engaged in the practice
of his chosen profession. In 1866 he married Nannie, daughter of Calvin and
Mahala (Payne) Brogan, of Knox County. She died in 1870, and in September,
1872, Mr. Brafford married Martha E. Tuggle, a daughter of Richard and Mary
A. Tuggle, of Knox County. They have two children, viz: Mary C. and Nannie
E. Politically Mr. Brafford is a Democrat.
