Kentucky: A History of the State, Perrin, Battle, Kniffin, 4th ed., 1887,
Garrard County.

GARRETT COOVERT is a son of David Coovert, who was born in New Jersey in
1780, and came to Kentucky with his parents in 1784. The family settled
on a farm near Harrodsburg, where David passed the winter season in the
manufacture of boots and shoes. In 1810 he married Mary, daughter of Lieut.
Philip Morgan, and there were born to him five sons and three daughters.
The grandfather of Garrett Coovert was also a native of New Jersey, was a
tanner and a farmer, and served seven years in the Revolutionary war. He
died a member of the Presbyterian Church. Garrett Coovert was born in
Mercer County, Ky., May 9, 1815, but moved to Garrard County in 1838 and
settled on a garden plot of six acres, which he cultivates in summer,
devoting the winter months to the making and repairing of shoes. In 1839
he married Miss Elizabeth Woods, who, with himself, is a member of the
Baptist Church. Mr. Coovert is also an Odd Fellow.
