W. C. MENEFEE. One of the most prominent characters in the north end
of the county is W. C. Menefee, of Flingsville. The Menefee family is
a large and prolific one, and have been residents of Grant County since
its organization. W. C. Menefee is a son of M. M. Menefee, and was
born in Grant County January 18th, 1850, and was raised on his father's
farm. He was one of a family of eight children, all of whom are living
but one. He grew up on his father's farm, attended the common schools
of the neighborhood, and received a good common school education. He
started in life as a farmer and has been farming and stock raising all
of his life. He has also been a dealer in live stock and a rehandler
of tobacco. He has a large tobacco warehouse at Flingsville and another
one at Gardnersville and he owns a fine farm at Flingsville of 216
acres and also owns one at Gardnersville and is one of the best
practical farmers in the state. He buys and ships each year from
250,000 to 500,000 pounds of tobacco. He was united in marriage to
Miss Fannie Vallandingham January 25th, 1877, and has three children,
all boys, Clarence, aged 22; Harry Simmons, aged 16, and Ervine, aged 5
years. In politics Mr. Menefee is a Republican. He and his wife are
each members of the Christian Church. He is one of the foremost
citizens of his part of the county.
