JAMES T. WILLIS was born in Montgomery county June 10, 1840, and his early
life was spent on the farm. He attended Columbia College, Mo. In 1861 he
entered the army of the Southern Confederacy. He witnessed the inauguration
of Jefferson Davis as President. After the war he returned to Grant
County. In 1871 he was appointed Clerk of the Grant Circuit Court. He was
twice re-elected and held office until September, 1886. Soon after he was
appointed Master Commissioner of the Grant Circuit Court by Judge Warren
Montford and served in this official capacity for six years. June 7, 1874,
he was married to Miss Alice, daughter of Dr. C. F. and Susan D. Violette.
Mr. Willis was an Odd Fellow and of much prominence, having served as
Grand Master of this state in 1886. At the time of his death, October 18,
1895, he was the law partner of Hon. W. W. Dickerson.
