    He was born 25 March 1863 and she on 15 February 1871.  They were married 10 August 1892.  She had taught school prior to her marriage.
    Citizens of Brown county, they moved to Coleman County in 1900; to eastern Concho in 1908 where they were among the early settlers.  Later they bought land in McCulloch and Gaines counties and moved to a farm south of Stacy.
    As with other stock-farmers of the day they grew much of their own food, making only three or four trips each year to Coleman for clothing and food staples such as flour and sugar.
    They went in business at Doole in 1919, building a home there in 1928.  J. L. Barnes died in 1938 and his widow continued to operate the business until 1940.  She moved to Brady in 1951 and died there in 1965.
    Their children are Jewell Chesser of Big Spring, Texas; Beatrice Dickinson of Brady; Aubyn Martin of Brady; Velica Harper of Presidio.
    Grandchildren: Barnes Brock, Warren Martin, J. A. Martin of Brady; Glennie Bowen, Ft. Worth; Mickey Clouse, Alpine; J. L. Chesser, Longview; B. G. Chesser, Houston - all in Texas.
    There are 15 great grandchildren and four great-great-grandchildren of Mr. and Mrs. J. L. Barnes.
